πͺ What Is Cryptocurrency?
π What Is Cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrency (or “crypto”) is a type of digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security. Unlike traditional money (dollars, euros, hryvnia), which is controlled by governments and banks, cryptocurrencies are typically decentralized β meaning no single person or institution controls them.
The first and most famous cryptocurrency is Bitcoin (BTC), created in 2009 by an anonymous person (or group) named Satoshi Nakamoto. Since then, thousands of other cryptocurrencies have been created, including Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and stablecoins like USDT.
π‘ Bitcoin (BTC)
Digital gold. A store of value. Only 21 million will ever exist. Used for long-term investment and hedging against inflation.
π· Ethereum (ETH)
A global computer for decentralized applications (DeFi, NFTs, games). The second largest cryptocurrency.
π’ Solana (SOL)
A fast, cheap blockchain for developers. Transactions cost fractions of a cent and settle in seconds.
βοΈ What Is Blockchain?
Think of blockchain as a shared digital notebook that millions of people have a copy of. Every time someone sends cryptocurrency, that transaction is written in everyone’s notebook. Because so many copies exist, no one can cheat, delete, or change past transactions. This makes blockchain transparent and secure.
